Huu Door
In the paths of the wicked lie thorns and snares,
but he who guards his soul stays far from them.
Train a child in the way he should go,
and when he is old he will not turn from it.

The Sand Burr
786
as-salaam 'alaykum.
This is a factual story about plants that grow in the fields. These are called "rogue"
plants, because the make impurities in the crop assessment and steal the fertilizer and
water from among the rows. There is an obvious lesson, but also a better one from
within the agronomy science of farming.
Sand Burrs
In the fields we used to see sand burrs, button weeds, and milk weed. As young guys,
we used to hire out to clean these pest weeds out of the fields. After the farmers
would spray herbicide, usually these weeds would survive the chemical attack, and
flourish anyway. So we used to curse these plants, but also we knew that without them
we would have made no money off of the farmers.
One of the farmers had studied agronomy in college. One day he was explaining some
scientific points about these kinds of weeds. He called them rogues, because the
presence of even small amounts of burr, milkweed, and buttonweed seeds in the soy
beans would cause the selling price of the crop to go down, so it was a rogue. It is easy
to see the dark buttons and grey burrs in among the soy bean seed, which is a milky
white color. In the assessment of the rogues, the price would be lowered. For many
farmers, this seemingly small difference in the purity in the seed could spell the
difference between making a profit or going in debt in that crop year. So it was smart
for the farmers to hire us to cut out these weeds before the crop developed.
We used to say: "knee high in July", and that was farmer talk to say that you had better
have your cultivation and your roguing done before the crop developed too big, or you
will harm the plants. If you were too late, then you would knock the corn over or break
off the bean bushes, and the crop would be stunted.
The agronomist farmer was saying:"these sand burrs (burdock thistle) will lie in the
earth 20 years, then out on nowhere, you have a big patch of sand burrs return. The
survival strategy of these plants is such, that they have adapted to survive floods, cold,
drought, and pestilence of various kinds, and still survive. Insects and herbicides and
anything we are aware of at this time can't kill these rogues. The only way is to walk
out in the field and just cut them to bits and pieces. That is the only thing that will kill
them. Even then, for as long as 20 years, the burrs will continue to emerge and spoil
the crop. The average is about 10 to 12 years that they can survive in the earth
dormant, but there are well documented cases where the fields have been cleared of
burrs for 19 years, and in the 20th, new burrs somehow managed to infest the fields
again. And the same goes for button weeds. All these kinds of rogue plants will lie
dormant and then by some mechanism that we don't understand, they germinate and
recreate the problem all over again. Even if you work hard for many years clearing the
till, it will seem like a waste."
Now adjust that to look at the heart. In the heart, which is made of earth, sometimes
the soil gets contaminated. There are various reasons for that, but as a good farmer of
that field, you can't worry about that issue. What is before you is to clean the planting,
and why you have a mess on your hands doesn't matter. In this you have to be very
strong, because there are spiritual sand burrs (old sins) that lie in the till. You can
clean up the burrs, but for as long as 12 years or 20 years, these spiritual weeds will
try to resurrect that same dirty sinfulness from within the heart.
The affrontation will present as a longing for a feeling or a pleasure. It will not be an
idea or memory, but it will channel as a commanding urge (nafs amara) and that will be
seen by the angels and God Almighty, as a blemish in your state (haalak).
My Shaykh has said that for young people, they must be protected for a period of time.
For girls it is to age 20 to 22, or marriage. For boys it is age 25 or even longer. He
said many boys never take on manhood, and remain childish well into adulthood. The
reason for this is that if you allow the dirty spiritual forces to come during that
vulnerable period of puberty, then that will continue to be a problem for the rest of the
persons life.
If you watch young people, they pass bad habits to each other just like the animals do.
Once a group encounters rogue spiritual burrs like this, the whole group will fall prey
to destructive activity. You can talk to them, but even if they understand your words,
the spiritual urge will still come, and they will slip (zall).
See this in the peculiar feature of a sand burr surface, as there are little hooked
spines. Once these spines get a hold of hair, they become entangled, and impossible to
remove without cutting.
Animals that have encountered burrs have been known to bite off a toe, or tear out
whole folds of skin to be rid of burrs. Animals can also transfer burrs from one to
another, until all of the animals have burrs on them. If you have ever cared for horses,
you will know that before you saddle a horse, you must be sure they have no burrs on
them. You also have to check your saddle blanket and tack for burrs as well. You can't
ride a horse with a burr on him. If you try to ride a horse with a burr under the saddle
you will be bucked off. This is the basis for the colorful question that is said to an
angry person:
"Whats wrong with you? Got a burr under your saddle?"
I have included these verses so that an authority might be known, as to what result will
come as a result of these spiritual burrs that cause a sliding back.

Parable of the Wheat and the Tares
- Jesus told them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good
seed in his field.
- But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds (tares) among the
wheat, and went away.
- When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.
- "The owner's servants came to him and said, 'Sir, didn't you sow good seed in your field?
Where then did the weeds come from?'
- "'An enemy did this,' he replied.
- "The servants asked him, 'Do you want us to go and pull them up?'
- "'No,' he answered, 'because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat
with them.
- Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect
the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my
barn.'" Matthew 13:24-30
