Arabic Sajedahs
19:58 – Maryam
With the Negus of Abyssinia Reference
Note: An encouragement to Muhammad (sal)and his followers during the time of the
first hijrah during the years of desert exile from Mecca. The account of the Negus of
Abyssinia's ruling about granting asylum to the first Muslims. Encouragements came to
support Islam, and to help them understand that this persecution is to be expected, and
every prophet endured such difficulties. Tafseer given below.
41.
And make mention (O Muhammad) in the Scripture of Abraham. Lo! he was a saint, a
Prophet.
(this is the 1st migration to Absysinia. The inference is that as Abraham AS was
compelled to migrate, so too should the believers of the One God Almighty. Since the
Quraysh tribe was bragging that Abraham was their patriarch through Ishma’el,
Rasoolallaah SAL was saying 2 things. First was ; “why are you worshipping idols?”
Abraham and Ishma’el (as) were not in that state of heart. Second, the need to migrate
when in an intractable situation arises is like the Patriarchs – Abraham AS and his
family)
42.
When he said unto his father: O my father! Why worshippest thou that which heareth
not nor seeth, nor can in aught avail thee?
43.
O my father! Lo! there hath come unto me of knowledge that which came not unto thee.
So follow me, and I will lead thee on a right path.
44.
O my father! Serve not the devil. Lo! the devil is a rebel unto the Beneficent.
(here we are informed that to worship the advisory practices [tagut] we are not entering
the practice of Abraham AS and his sons AS. The idea that a set of rituals that have
either no effect or a satanic effect is rejected, and it must be a total practice that not
only outwardly shows, but has vast internal affect to clear satanic influence. The
concept arises that there are 2 sacrifices, as in Mosaic law, a blood sacrifice for the
body & heart, and a scapegoat that was to carry away the satanic influences of the mind)
45.
O my father! Lo! I fear lest a punishment from the Beneficent overtake thee so that thou
become a comrade of the devil.
(to his father - the advisory whispers [waswas. yuwaswisu] into the hearts of believers to
try to cause them to error, and perhaps sin and make that into trespass [surat al- Nas] a
follower of the low nafs amara)
46.
He said: Rejectest thou my gods, O Abraham? If thou cease not, I shall surely stone
thee. Depart from me a long while!
47.
He said: Peace be unto thee! I shall ask forgiveness of my Lord for thee.
Lo! He was ever gracious unto me.
(as Nahor was his father , he never lost respect, and made prayer that he be shown the
Truth)
48.
I shall withdraw from you and that unto which ye pray beside Allah, and I shall pray unto
my Lord. It may be that, in prayer unto my Lord, I shall not be unblest.
49.
So, when he had withdrawn from them and that which they were worshipping beside
Allah. We gave him Isaac and Jacob. Each of them We made a Prophet.
50.
And We gave them of Our mercy, and assigned to them a high and true renown.
(this to comfort believers so that they may be encouraged, even though the physical
circumstances seem unfortunate)
51.
And make mention in the Scripture of Moses. Lo! he was chosen,
and he was a messenger (of Allah), a Prophet.
(the word [mukhlas] denotes special selection being preferred on him AS)
52.
We called him from the right slope of the Mount, and brought him nigh in communion.
(rasool means [one sent], and is conferred on angels and particularly on Moses AS)
(this is a reference to the burning bush where Reality was explained/conferred on him
AS)
53.
And We bestowed upon him of Our mercy his brother Aaron, a Prophet.
(likewise)
54.
And make mention in the Scripture of Ishmael. Lo! he was a keeper of his promise,
and he was a messenger (of Allah) a Prophet.
55.
He enjoined upon his people worship and almsgiving,
and was acceptable in the sight of his Lord.
(this was Ishma’el’s (as) promise to God Almighty, and also to his father Abraham when
they rebuilt the Qa’ba)
56.
And make mention in the Scripture of Idris. Lo! he was a saint, a Prophet;
(even though he was before any covenant of law existed. He AS [Enoch] is recognized
as a very high prophet and a ruler over mankind before Noah AS)
(since he AS was before Abraham AS, he is considered to be a judge over all mankind,
not Jewish or Arab)
57.
And We raised him to high station.
(Bible concordance references appear here. Idris (Enoch AS) was said to walk among
the people for 365 years, and was satisfied by being one who didn’t suffer death pangs,
but went in a chariot directly to the heavenly life)
58.
uulaa’ika al-ladhina an’am Allaahu ‘alaykum min an-nabeeyna min dhurriyayti
‘Aadam wa minnan hamalnaa maa’ Nuuheen wa min dhurriyyati Ibraahima wa
Israa’el wa minnan hadaynaa wa ajtabayna. idha yutlaay ‘alayhim ‘aayaatu ar-
Rahmaani kharru sujadan wa bukiyyan - sajedah
these (are) the ones bestowed (by) God upon them (as) the messengers (and) from
progeny (of) Adam AS and from (those) carried from Noah and progeny from Abraham
AS and Isra’el [Jacob] and from those guided and sleeted. When come/descend upon
them signs (of) the Beneficent/Merciful (they droop/fall prostrating/submitting and
cry/weep/abundantly regret - sajdah
These are they unto whom Allah showed favor from among the
Prophets, of the seed of Adam and of those whom We carried (in
the ship) with Noah, and of the seed of Abraham and Israel, and
from among those whom We guided and chose. When the
revelations of the Beneficent were recited unto them, they fell
down, adoring and weeping.
(this is a proof that what Rasoolallaah SAL and his nation, experienced was not unique.
Many exalted prophets come before and all of them, when they realized the Truth and
God’s favor, they fell down physically and spiritually into submission to God Almighty.
Jacob (as) particularly is singled out as being favored and having a pure heart. Mary was
the highest example for women. In hadith, Rasoolallaah SAL, when asked by Fatima, was
she the most perfect woman, Rasoolallaah explained that of all women Mary AS was the
very best. She was of the house of the Levies, and of Isra’el. Rasoolallaah recognized
that Isra’el had very exalted prophets and rulers, like David AS.)
(Noah AS was credited with bringing the first legal cannon, and applies to every human
on the earth, now and before)
Commentary:
This sajadah was to encourage the believers about the hijrah to Africa. It came to show
that every prophet was forced to move because of persecution. Also there is an effort to
recognize the total preserved Qur’an, and to uplift the nation of Rasoolallah SAL. As
they were banned from Mekka at the time, and not to be able to buy food, it was a very
hard time, and many people were dying. Abu Talib and Khadijah died in this persecution
and hardship.
Some Qurash were killing lower members of weak tribes, so Rasoolallaah SAL gave the
order to make the first emigration, to preserve the believers. Even then they were
followed and were subject to extradition. However the Negus of Abyssinia would not
allow this because of the contents of the Qur’an. Actually he protected them, and if not
for the concept of Jesus AS as equal to God, the theology was consistent.

The Recital to the Negus of Abyssinia
Upon their reception to the Kings Chambers;
When asked of their opinion of Jesus they sought to recite:
16.
And make mention of Mary in the Scripture, when she had
withdrawn from her people to a chamber looking East,
17.
And had chosen seclusion from them. Then We sent unto her Our
spirit and it assumed for her the likeness of a perfect man.
18.
She said: Lo! I seek refuge in the Beneficent One from thee,
if thou art God fearing.
19.
He said: I am only a messenger of thy Lord,
that I may bestow on thee a faultless son.
20.
She said: How can I have a son when no mortal hath touched me,
neither have I been unchaste!
21.
He said: So (it will be). Thy Lord saith: It is easy for Me. And (it will
be) that We may make of him a revelation for mankind and a mercy
from Us, and it is a thing ordained.
Commentary:
He and his clerics were moved to tears during the recital. The Quraysh ambassadors
were incensed, and tried to emphasize that the Qur’an doesn’t accept Jesus as God, or
Son of God, but the King picked up a straw and drew a line or placed it on the floor and
said:
” the difference between us and you is no larger that the width of this insignificant
straw.” Negus then returned their possessions and freed them into his lands to dwell and
refuted the Quraysh claims.
For Rasoolallah SAL, he was losing hope and feeling lost, as there seemed to be no end
to the suffering. So the point of the sajadah was to correct that and place strong faith in
him SAL, and to explain that he was no different than other prophets that were sent
before. It was shortly after that he made the treaty with Yathrib, and with his SAL arrival
there as governor, began the Islamic calendar.
