Inner Life
Arabic - The Mu'awdhiyn - Seeking Refuge - A Qur'an Perspective
The Mu’awdhiyn
2 Refuges from the Accursed Shaytan

This is from the word ‘awdhu, or seek refuge. There are several key concepts given in the
aqayda that use ‘awudhu. All have external, internal, and Reality meanings.

Surat Al-Falaq -  the Breaking (of the darkness by light)

B’ismillaah                ir-Rahman    ir-Rahiym
In the name of God - the Merciful  the Compassionate

qul    a^uudhu       bi       Rabb      il-falaq (1)
say:   I seek refuge  in the Lord (of) the dawn (breaking of darkness)

wa   min   sharri             maa   khalaq (2)
and  from evil (mischief) from  creation (evil creations)(seductive energy and form)

wa   min  sharri   ghasiqin            idhaa   waqab (3)
and  from evil (of) darkness (of intention) when overspreading (from behind as we see
not)

wa  min  sharri  in-naffasati  fi  il-^uqad (4)
and  from evil, the blowers (breath of practitioners) on the knots (evil spells, curses. evil
eye)

wa   min sharri  hasidin  ^idhaa  hasad (5)
and from evil mischief (of) an envier (shaitan or demon) when (they) act out on envy.

(Evil spells and curses were blown on knots of cord and thrown into houses, and in
front of ones path of walking.  The purpose was to bind people up in difficulties and
ignorance, and generally impede those who the secret arts practitioner wanted to
fight. Thorns were also thrown to impede the path of the believers, and cause them
    pain and difficulty.)

Surat  an-Nas - the  Humans

Bismillaah                  ir-Rahmaan    ir-Raheem
In the name of God -  the Merciful  the Compassionate

qul   a^uudhu      bi   Rabb           in-naas (1)
say:  I seek refuge in the Lord (of) the humans

Maliki                        in-naas (2)
King (Sovereign) (of) the humans

I
llaahi                                       in-naas (3)
God (Worshipped Judge)(of) the humans

min    sharri              il-waswas                                            il-khanaas (4)
from  evil (feelings) the whispering one (is seducing, then) withdraws (unseen, but heard)

a
l-ladhiy                          yuwaswisu   fee            sudoor      in-naas (5)
the same ones (who are) whispering    in (to the) hearts (of) the humans

min                 al-jinnati   wa   an-naas (6)
from (among) the jinns     and  the humans (whispering is happening and most are
seduced)

(shaitan whispers into the hears and minds of humans and jinn, then runs leaving
    us/them to
experience the degradation, if we don't know how to tell right from wrong by
    wisdom.  To
the humans this seems like an idea or motivation or feeling that rises up naturally
inside, and   to the uninformed, this will result in sinful actions through ignorance.
On judgement day, shaitan will say he only suggested to do such and such, and it is
our/their problem if the whisper went unrecognized as evil and was followed to it's
conclusion. Our job is to know right from wrong, and then act accordingly as
rightly guided humans (mursheed),  then we will not worship shaitan through his
whispers, which result in manifesting his evil qualities and form. According to
Qur'an, God will fill the hells with jinn and men who fail to see this.)

Al-’Auwdhu

A’auwdhu bi Illaahi min ash-shaytani ir-rajiym.

Lightning Strikes
Bawa Muhaiyaddeen taught that the “min ash-shaytan” was like a lightening that strikes
the satanic manifestation. This is not all that apparent on the outside, but is often so when
you look inside. The witness of this is the frightful zap you feel during fajr, and you are
dozing off. This comes to tap on that energy of torpor that is creeping up on you, as a jolt.

Fajr means to Break
Shaykh also said that the fajr is the time of the breaking of the sleep torpor which occurs
for the early prayer. There are many hadith on this, but what Bawa said is that this is a
dangerous time, and if you are seeking refuge to break the darkness in your heart, you
have to stay awake from fajr time to at least 7 or 8 AM. It is at that time period that satan
has permission to create the most mischief for the human.

Darkness as it Spreads
Bawa also that this is the “ghasiqin idha waqab” darkness as it spreads, and is seen when
people fall asleep when good spiritual energy is being given, or during prayers. That
effect of tiredness and mental stupor is “ghasiqin idha waqab”. Often you will have
nightmares during this time, particularly if you have prayed, and then immediately go
back to sleep from stupor. This is the encroaching creation tendency you see in all
things. In the mind it is the power of suggestion that leads, and why commercials on TV
work so well.

Sneaking Whisperer who Withdraws
Bawa also talked about the “waswas”, the whispering. He said, out of envy, the satan has
access to the heart feelings, and so he will whisper suggestions into the heart. We don’t
hear a voice, so we assume it is from ourselves, but it is not. Because the heart is the
“master without a tongue”, mind will not hear the warning, but it comes as a feeling from
our knowledge, or from the Messenger (sal) that is the “miqdar al-‘azhiym” the inner
voice of Guidance. Bawa said that if we miss this, then at least catch that feeling by
remembering that lust, anger, miserliness, hastiness, short temper, harassment, and the
like are from the “waswas”. This is called will power, but as psychologist will tell you,
when you compare the power of the will verses to the subconscious mind, or heart, the
subconscious is far "superior" in strength..

Blowers on Knots
Shaykh said that "blowers on knots" was when pagan people practiced dark arts that took
the form of saying a magic spell, taking a string and making a knot, then blowing on the
knot as they tightened the string. This process tied the dark spell into the knot of the
string. Various people then threw these knots in the path of Rasoolallaah(sal) and his
followers(rd). This was presumably to subconsciously infect the believers with the
darknesses of the secret arts, better known as the satanic "egoistic" personna.

Will Power Vs. the Subconscious
The subconscious will be a“superiour”mind. That is to say that researchers have
compared the vitality or strength of will power against subconscious craving (waswas).
So from many commentators, it is well known that if you turn to will power as a total
solution, you will fall short. It is better to find a way to fix the heart, rather than on using
the mind to fix the mind.

When only as-Salaw Tauheed will do
So if the ego is so strong and everywhere we are being attacked, how do we get free.? It
is suggested that only honest sincere prayer (salaw) to God alone can fix the human
condition. When will power and schemes and intellect fail, your only course is to turn to
God. That is why He is called "One". There is only 1 unique way of doing this, and all the
rest of the stuff is a gimmick. The simple test is this: ask if it can operate by itself, or
does it need help? Does it help or does it need help? You will find as you try all the
options, there will be one way that works for you, or feeds you. All the rest of your
lifestyle will consume you. That is how you tell. If your belief is such that you gain more
problems than you are solving, then you better examine your belief. This is tawassul
tawheed, connecting to oneness, or unity. Seeking refuge in God alone is the ultimate
tawheed. That is the essence (dhat) of prayer (saluw).

Citation from Jungian psychology:

"Jung believed that dreams offered solutions to problems. He believed that the
purpose of psychological therapy was not to put the patient into an impossible state
of happiness, but to help him or her face problems with philosophical patience and
    determination."
    http://library.thinkquest.org/05aug/01261/carl_jung.htm

"Jung visualized the subconscious and unconscious as an ocean, because both are
inexhaustible. Freud saw the unconscious, or subconscious, as little more than a
garbage can, or bottomless pit where issues like guilt and failure and sexual
    frustrations were cached."

"In keeping with the scope and related concepts of Carl Jung, unconscious is the
sum total of those psychic activities that elude an individual's direct knowledge of
    himself or herself........
Properly, unconscious processes cannot be made conscious at will; their
unraveling requires the use of specific techniques, such as association, dream
    interpretation,......"
