Romans 1:19: ……for the Truth about God is manifestly shown (in them).
20: From the time the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky and
everything that God made. They can clearly see His invisible qualities, His eternal
power, and His divine nature, so they have no valid excuse what-soever, for not
knowing of God.
21:Yes, they knew of God, but they wouldn’t worship Him as God, or even give
Him thanks. (NLT)
The Clay Teapot
786
as-salaam 'alaykum.
This is a song about an inspiration I had about the capabilities of the earth.
The Clay, the Potter, and the Teapot, a small stanza.
An intention
A clay oriental teapot, well detailed & glazed & fired, is priceless. Gold has an intrinsic value,
quality through every noble metal atom, and needs no adornment. Where clay is valued because
something beautiful was made from a base element. Something valuable was fashioned of nothing
(al-bari'a musawwir). Through the fire a putty was formed, fired, glazed, and fired again. If given
basic care, it can serve for many years, and the most decorated may even have jewels placed on
it, and be placed safe for ages.
Selah.
A song
With out the clay, there is no medium.
With out the potter, it can never take value.
With out seeing, no design can be drawn.
with out an Image to inspire, no clay will depict an image.
The potter will search all over to find that special clay,
and then sell every other land to buy that land.
He won't see a putrid mud flat swamp,
but a place where he will screed off detritus
then mix and fold it into a useful putty,
it's like a dark sticky mud settled from the ripple free calm water.
He will not see dirt, but a precious china emerging from his hands.
He needs only 100 square for a whole lifetime.
Others will need 4 acres and will always be looking for more.
A farmer with beasts will never tame his land,
And will never be done scooping feces, and tearing out weeds.
But a clay field won't even grow weeds.
It is inert, seeking no purpose and free.
It's only good for one man who does one thing.
And he will know that clay by seeing nothing roots in it.
And it won't sprout seeds while he works to form it.
And it will hold it's image for days in faith to it's nature.
And it won't object to the fire that strengthens.
And it doesn't care what color it becomes.
And it won't care if its painted or plain.
And it's value is not what it by nature,
But it's value is in the beautiful image it takes.
And the utility it serves.
And it's smoothness in the hand.
And the radiance to the eye that looks.
And the sale of one precious teapot will buy a lifetime.
And maybe even a place in the palace court.
And that teapot will be near the Emperor, on His table.
And that cup will be in His hand to drink.
And He won't need to conquer a mountain to get gold.
Nor will he need to hide it in a treasury, in corners.
Nor can it be melted down by thieves.
Nor made into coins for the greedy to bury.
Nor a dust that is used to engrave books that will rot.
Nor beaten into golden molten gods and jewelry.
It can only be broken, and can never be changed or recycled.
it returns to the earth to become clay again.
once broken, it has no noble qualities to redeem.
a form it could never make itself into.
nor even would it care if it was formed,
or not formed, indifferent.
Only the potter would see that selflessness pliability.
Only the potter can know how to do that work
Only the potter can know why he likes clay above gold.
Only the potter can fashion beauty from baseness.
Only the potter knows that pattern and beauty.
Only the potter has strength in his hands for that.
Without the hands, clay will never do.
Without the clay, no pot would be made.
Locked to each other with eternal purpose.
clay without inspiration will never serve.
inspiration without clay will never be known as beauty.
without a teapot,
can tea be served?
with out a cup,
Can the Emperor drink as a man?
Can he toast to that Image?
Can he toast to that inspiration?
Can he admire it's line and its sheen?
Can he see himself through that?
As a seer ?
As a partaker?
As a cherished service ?
As an intention surrounding it all ?
Even if the cup breaks,
It's image lingers.
It's purpose still required.
And intention lasts eternal.
To serve up the clay forever.
Beauty within Beauty.
Service within Service
Image within Image.
Unified within One.
Subhan wa Selah.
