8. Diphthongs & Prolonging Letters
A combination of letters that meshes 2 diacritical marks. These are often not
vowelled, except in Qur’an.
Daaud = David – (d-w-d)
So the waw diphthongs the vowel to aaw, also a alif prolonger
‘alay kum = upon you all – (‘a-l-y)
aay diphthongs the vowel to aaiy
yawm = a day
diphthong waw, yaum – (y-w-m) (Hebrew=yoom)
Prolonging Alifs, Waw, and Yaa
1. ad-deen – yaa prolongs ee sound, deen, the judgement
(d-y-n) the yaa is not pronounced, but prolongs eee
2. ar-Rahmaan – the aa sound is prolonged by alif meddah
(r-h-m) meddah sits between hey and nun, prolonged aaa
3. an-noor – the ooh sound prolonged by the waw, the light
(n-w-r) no waw sound, just prolongs existing ooh vowel
4. laaa – lam connected to alif makes long laaa, no!
this is called a lam alif
5. Ismaa’eel = Ishmael
prolonged aaa (alif), and eee (yaa)
6. Nuuh = Noah
waw prolongs ooh
7. Muusaa = Moses
two prolongs, waw on ooh, and alif meddah on aaa
8. Aaameena = Amina
Alif at beginning prolongs, and yaa prolongs eee
9. ‘Eiysaaa = Jesus
eiy prolongs ain, alif prolongs aaa
10. Aaadam = Adam
Alif prolongs the aaa
11. Ibraaheem = Abraham
Alif prolong, yaa prolong
12. al-‘aalameen = the universes
Alif prolong, yaa prolong, and also sound plural
