Slavery - Polytheism
  • 786
  • Torah: Ex. 20:2 - I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt,
out of the land of slavery.
  • What is the greater meaning of "slavery" that the Torah is speaking about ?

Peace be upon you:

There is first an affirmation of Who authored the exodus. That is important because
the quality of God is that He has no partners. There is only 1 who only gives, and all
the rest of us take from that Power through neshama, our asking.

In the legal sense, a physical liberation did occur. That is accepted in monotheism
without doubt. I do not want to deliberate that point. That leads to perceptions that one
group is favored, and others are not. That is best left for another time.

I do want to explain the concept of spiritual slavery. In the Egyptian culture, there was
an ignorance of what constitutes God from gods. It was a question of sorting out what
is created from what is not created. In simple terms, what gives Power and what needs
Power ?

Ancient people were at least bluntly honest about identifying things that seem
powerful, or never changing. So object like stars and certain spiritual forces were
selected as gods, because they seemed to have power.

Certainly God is seeing and giving, so when someone selects a force other than Him,
He responds in kind. It has an echo quality. As you keep asking in the falsehood, it
keeps building up layer upon layer. It is what is called a "self fulfilling prophecy". It
seems like power, but it is merely a lesson sent to explain what God is not. That is why
much suffering comes from certain kinds of false prayer. Even though God is
merciful, we must understand this is a place where we learn. Sometimes we must
actually get in before we get out, and that is called experience, or wisdom.

I hope everybody who reads this has a Exodus from spiritual slavery, and receives what
they should.
I mean that in the best possible way.
