As-salaam 'alaykum
Here is a story about the relationship of a Shaykh to a mureed.
Birds need a Branch
A bird that soars into the sky needs a support like a branch of a tree to rest on when tired.
Otherwise it has to come all the way down to earth to rest.
In the same manner, even if a spiritual aspirant flies in all of the 18,000 worlds, unless he
takes refuge under a spiritual master (shaykh), he will not have any support to rest on
when he is tired, during his journey. If he doesn’t have a Master, he will not have any
place to rest.
So as people in this modern world are learning arts and sciences and other areas of
knowledge, they will wander around wailing in woe because of that, having found no rest
or satisfaction within that type of quest.
Because of this, they will return again and again to the artistic stages of the world, and
will continue to pick up new burdens to carry, having not dealt with anything fully, but
just multiplying problems to a severe degree. They will cut off their spiritual arms and
will not be able to grasp Reality, having rejected any guide, inner or outer.
Such people in their ignorance of spiritual matters of the heart, and have driven off the
Prophets and the Saints and the Lights of God. They ceaselessly study the words written
in books, but because they have no guide to inner realms, they drive away the divine
teachers, and wallow in heedlessness. This forms the grounds for the appearance of
fanaticism and destruction in the end times.

The Shaykh taught that people need a Guide, because if they don't have companionship, a
place to participate and not be left out, they will fall away. In this falling away, the
mureed will turn to the easily found things of the world, and the progress that was made
will be lost. That is the meaning of the birds having a branch to rest on, so they don't have
to go all the way back to the dirt of the world, by default, lacking any other support.
