The Funny Apple Tree

as-salaam 'alaykum.
This is a true story about an apple tree that we harvested, during the time when I was
growing up. When you read the story you will see how farmers graft different branches
on to a root. The example works for explaining divine secrets, as you will see from the
example.

The Funny Apple Tree – One Root with Many Branches

In my youth, we lived on a small farm, and on the farm there was an apple tree. Now,
having an apple tree is not remarkable in and of itself, but this was a special apple tree. In
Iowa where I grew up, we used to husband plants by grafting. What had been done was to
form an apple tree from grafting.

So this tree had the roots and trunk of one kind of apple tree. The branches were
variations of different apple sub-species. While I don’t want to get technical, it is enough
to know that there were apples that came fast, or early summer apples. There were also
late apples too, the apples that were to be used for canning in the fall. Some of the apples
were for eating. Some were only good for cooking, like apple pie or strudel. Some of the
apples were red. Some were green. Some were hard and some were soft. Some were little
apples that were not good for anything but to feed the birds in the winter, and we called
them crab apples.

The time this was most apparent was in the spring. As all trees blossom in the spring
time, so too did this apple tree. It was a wonder to look at. One branch had pink blossoms.
Another branch had white blossoms. Some of the other branches had different colors, or
variegations on the blossoms. Each blossom produced fruit according to its kind. Even
the bark and the leaves had different shapes, colors, and textures. Yet all of that was being
supported by the sap of the mother root tree.

The root of the mother tree by itself was no good for apples, but it was very strong and
hearty to withstand the cold winters. That root and trunk was alive in February, when it
was still very cold. Even so, the sap would begin to flow and begin the process of
awakening the buds for a new year. So even though the root itself could not produce
proper apples, it still was selected because of it’s unique strength. In fact, the whole idea
of grafting would not have worked without that strong root and trunk. It supported much
weight and it was resistant to blight, mold and insects as well.

As I looked, my father told me this analogy. He said that this was like what God did with
people. On one trunk He has placed many colors and many types. No one type is good
and the others bad. Each has a time and a use according to it’s kind. He said that the races
and the religions were like that. Every religion came from one God. Every race came
from the family of Adam(as). Each one had a time and a season where its time was right.
He would speak ecclesiastically about everything having a time under heaven.*

He also said that although the mother tree had barren blossoms and crab apple fruit, you
had to let it reproduce. If you wanted to have a beautifully grafted tree, you had to let that
tree bear fruit sometimes, so you could harvest the seedlings to form the grafts.

I helped him sometimes when he was gardening. I often commented on how hard he had
pruned the trees and other plants. I told him that it seemed like a waste. He replied that in
order to maximize the power in the mother root tree, you have to direct the sap only to
the parts that produce fruit. He said if you don’t, you will not have apples for the winter.
He also said if you don’t do that for two years running, you would not even get any apples
the second year. All you would get is crab apples and a whole lot of useless leaves, and
then you have to start over training the tree.

As I got older I realized how important the apple tree lesson was. There were times in my
life that I gave up on things. All that happened was that I had to go back again and retrain
those aspects of my life. As my father said, you might get by with cheating for one year,
but if you don’t take action before the second season comes, then you go wild. Then
everything has to start over again. I found that it is easier to do a little work on things
each day, rather than let things pile up for years. If you do that, then you need a chain saw
and everything is a huge problem.

*John 14:2
In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you.
I am going there to prepare a place for you.

Eccl 3:1 Solomon (as)
There is a time for everything, and a season for every purpose under heaven:

Eccl 3:17
I thought in my heart;
"God will bring to judgment
both the righteous and the wicked,
for there will be a time for every activity,
a time for every deed."
