Hilye - Descriptions of Muhammad (sal)
Hilye is Turkish for the Arabic word hilya, which has several meanings, including
physicality, disposition, image, character, and description. Dictionary definitions but
begin to convey the sublime meaning of the hilye, which depicts the Prophet's (sal)
moral, behavioral, and spiritual qualities as well as physical appearance and
affrontation.
His Nature (sal)
Sahih Bukhairi
By nature he was gentle and kind-hearted, always inclined to be gracious and to
overlook the faults of others. Politeness and courtesy, compassion and tenderness,
simplicity and humility, sympathy and sincerity were some of the keynotes of his
character. In the cause of right and justice he could be resolute and severe but more
often than not, his severity was tempered with generosity. He had charming
manners which won him the affection of his followers and secured their devotion.
Though virtual king of Arabia and an apostle of Allah, he never assumed an air of
superiority. Not that he had to conceal any such vein by practice and artifice -- with
fear of Allah, sincere humility was ingrained in his heart.
A Living Revelation (sal)
Narrated `Aisha (rdh)
When asked what Rasoolallaah (sal) was like, his ways, and manner of life; she
relied he (sal) resembled the Qur'an. (a living embodiment of the revelation).
His Appearance (sal)
Transmitted from 'Ali, who, when asked to describe the Prophet (sal) said:
He was not tall and stretched out nor short and compressed. He was medium sized.
His hair was not short and curly, nor was it lank, but in between. His face was not
pudgy, but there was a roundness to it. His skin was white. His eyes were black. He
had long eyelashes. He was big-boned and had wide shoulders. He had no body
hair except in the middle of his chest. He had thick hands and feet. When He
walked, he walked inclined, as if descending a slope. When He looked at someone,
He looked at him full face.

Hadith of the Luminous Mark and Signs of Prophet hood (sal)
Between His shoulder was the seal of prophecy, the sign that He was the last of the
prophets. He was the most generous-hearted of men, the most truthful of them in
speech, the most mild-tempered of them, and the noblest of them in lineage.
Whoever saw Him, spontaneously was in awe of Him. And whoever associated
with Him familiarly, loved Him. Anyone who would describe Him would say, I
never saw, before Him or after Him, the like of Him. Peace be upon Him.
Akhlaq ar-Rasoolallaah (sal)
B'ismillaah ir-rahmaan ir-raheem
The contemplation of Muhammad's (sal) manifest physical form and earthly manner of living (sunnat
& sirat) is done in various ways. There is consensus in comparative religious studies, that this
messenger (sal) and prophet (sal) is the best described historically. There are well established
scientifically managed collections of the works and events of his (sal) earthly life.
The most accepted is the revelation, the Qur'an. It is preserved not only by the words given by
Jibra'el (as) in Arabic, but also the meanings are explained by the history and the personal example of
Rasoolallaah (sal) himself. The preservation was made complete by Uthman al-Affan (rd) in written
form. The order was changed from historical to the order dictated by Rasoolallaah (sal) himself, and
that is unique among Holy book collections. Rasoolallaah (sal) not only carried the Qur'an in
memory, and oversaw its written collection, but he (sal) was the embodiment of what the Qur'an
reveals as spiritually successful and useful. He is the insan kamil (sal), or perfected man.
The circumstances of Rasoolallaah' s (sal) life, that he was an orphan, raised in a remote place, taught
a pure form of Hijaz Arabic, and a man of the field and caravan in nature, gave him (sal) a certain
simplicity, or open pliability for the revelation. There are countless meanings to Ummiy'un (sal) but it
is a characteristic of prophets that they are prepared to do what is required. Also the fact that he
(sal) had no art or science training from which to fashion the Qur'an, became a proof and a
consternation to the cognizant poetry of the time in Mecca. It was a fact that many of the first
believers accepted the Qur'an because of it's poetic beauty, and not so much for its messege.
